Bigger barges

Norddeutsche Wasserweg Logistik (NWL – North German Waterways Logistics), a PPP in which Rhenus Group is a shareholder, together with the Weser Business Association, have proposed a regular inland navigation service to move containers between the ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Bremen.

At last month’s Transport Logistic fair in Munich, Rhenus Group and its trimodal logistics affiliate Contargo presented their concepts for a new fleet of low-emissions inland waterway vessels on the Rhine. Two push-barge combinations, each comprising one motorised vessel and as many as three barges, are under development.

HGK Dry Shipping, part of Hafen und Güterverkehr Köln AG, and food group ADM (Archer-Daniels-Midland) have signed a charter agreement for what they described as a ‘ground-breaking’ inland waterway vessel.

HGK Shipping is joining the Green Award certification programme, which provides environment-friendly solutions for inland waterway vessels.

The UK Government announced that around 500 male asylum seekers will be housed on a barge, and more will follow in other UK ports.
