Gottwald’s auto straddle carrier

News-in-print

Demag Mobile Cranes GmbH Gottwald is developing a fully automated shuttle straddle carrier. Currently it is at the design stage, but some sub-systems, such as steering and positioning are already being tested in component form. A prototype is scheduled to be completed by December.

Gottwald is main contractor for the overhead unmanned stacking cranes at the new Hessenoord/ MSC terminal in Antwerp, but the autostrad has probably come too late for this.

The quay-yard navigation will be by DGPS, which Gottwald claims provides a ±15mm accuracy, checked against onboard odometry. This part is similar to the proven Gottwald AGVs, but these employ a transponder reference instead of DGPS. Embedded transponders will, however, be used under the cranes where “shadow” could affect the satellite coverage.
