A revised port tariff which sees very sharp increases has been issued by the Chennai Port Authorities. The move comes as India’s new government settles in to a period of what it is calling “port-led development”, in a bid to accelerate international trade and underline its strategic importance.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has won the contract to build and operate a new container terminal at Ennore Port (recently renamed Kamarajar Port) in Tamil Nadu, 24 km north of Chennai, on India’s east coast.

Bay of Bengal Gateway Terminal Private Ltd, the consortium formed to design, build and operate a container terminal at the Indian port of Ennore in Tamil Nadu state, has announced that has withdrawn from the project with immediate effect.

India’s Chennai Port Trust (CPT) plans to call for new bids for the country’s first deepwater container terminal after rejecting the bid of Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (MPSEZ) to develop the Rs37B (US$690M) project on the grounds that the revenue share of 5% offered by the company, which was the only bidder, was too low.

A plan to build a 4M TEU/year mega container terminal at India’s second-largest container port (see WorldCargo News August 2008, p7) would appear to have hit the rocks after none of the shortlisted bidders submitted a financial bid.
