Labour Minister proposes strike-free mediation in Port of Montreal dispute

Even though short-lived, the ILA port strike is expected to result in a capacity decline of 10-17% for Asia exporters.

Longshore workers at the Port of Montreal have launched an “indefinite” overtime strike.

The overtime refusal is aimed at further intensifying the labour standoff as talks between the union and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) remain unresolved.

Longshoremen are back on the docks at US east and gulf coast ports, but the ILA has not contractually accepted the negotiated wage increase, and there are still issues to resolve.

While the strike on the US East and Gulf Coast has ended, Xeneta’s Peter Sand warns that “it is only a tentative agreement, and automation at ports will remain a major stumbling block.”
