NRF: October imports to remain strong despite ILA strike

Even though short-lived, the ILA port strike is expected to result in a capacity decline of 10-17% for Asia exporters.

Longshore workers at the Port of Montreal have launched an “indefinite” overtime strike.

The overtime refusal is aimed at further intensifying the labour standoff as talks between the union and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) remain unresolved.

The Union’s demand that there will be no further full or semi-automation at east and gulf coast terminals would prevent these terminals integrating with the emerging digital supply chain.

While the strike on the US East and Gulf Coast has ended, Xeneta’s Peter Sand warns that “it is only a tentative agreement, and automation at ports will remain a major stumbling block.”
