USMX seeks injunction directing the ILA to negotiate

Longshoremen at the Port of Montreal in Canada have voted for a strike notice as their union heads into mediation to try and reach a deal on a new contract.

The US Federal Maritime Commission said it would fully investigate and prosecute any violations of maritime laws and regulations during potential port closures.

USMX says it wants to negotiate, ILA says employers refuse to accept its bottom line on pay increases.

Import cargo into Los Angeles increased 18% in August as the number of vessel calls at the port reached a four-year peak.

With the Biden administration declining to intervene, the threat of a port strike on the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico is increasingly likely to materialise.
