A major lighting retrofit at the Lake Ontario port has received an environmental award
Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has received a Horizon Utilities Energy Excellence Award for undertaking a lighting retrofit at 450 Sherman Ave., a multi-tenanted warehouse with more than 325,000 ft2 of storage and office space. “The project has delivered great results for us and for our tenants,” said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. “Environmental responsibility is one of our primary guiding principles, and we are very pleased when we can save energy, save money, and make our tenants happy, all at the same time.”
Funding for the retrofit came from HPA’s ongoing Green Initiatives Program, which sets aside funding for projects that reduce energy consumption, and from the Ontario Power Authority’s saveONenergy incentive programme. Horizon Utilities assisted HPA throughout the process, providing technical advice and programme information.
The retrofit involves the ongoing replacement of 1200 400W sodium vapour light fixtures with high-efficiency light fixtures and motion sensors. On completion, the retrofit is expected to result in annual savings of around 940,000 kWh, and pay for itself within a year.
