Mercitalia Rail (Gruppo FS Italiane) and Yilport, the operator of San Cataldo Container Terminal, have jointly initiated this repositioning service  for type 45R1 empty reefers from the Molo Polisettoriale (Multisector Pier) in the Port of Taranto to the interporto (multimodal platform/logistics platform) in Livorno.

This is organised as a “spot service” by Mercitalia Rail. Type 45R1 refers to 40ft high cube containers. It usually indicates ISO width, but europallet width is included.

The service uses low bed flat cars to ensure structure gauge clearance on the Tyrrhenian Railway. Train length is 450m and train weight is 400 tonnes. The rail distance is 836 kms. In Taranto, train formation is carried out by Yilport, which has two V100 shunting locos.

There are plans to double the size of the “cold village” in the Toscano di Livorno Guasticce interporto by 2026.
