Drewry: East Mediterranean hubs struggle amidst lingering Red Sea crisis
NewsThe re-routing of mainline vessels via the Cape of Good Hope has led to a significant downturn in vessel call capacity at East and Central Mediterranean hub ports.
Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) has joined the PortChain Connect network and will use the system to improve berthing and planning at its facility in Greece’s largest port.
The decision follows successful trials that demonstrated the improvements that could come about as a result of PCT using PortChain Connect to digitalise its berth management processes. PCT will now use the system to “increase the quality and speed of their berth alignment with customers through digital handshakes and secure data sharing”.
The Portchain Connect platform provides PCT with real-time schedule information and vessel movement updates from ocean carriers’ own systems meaning that the terminal operator can react quickly and effectively to any changes that might occur. That means that the terminal plan for the ship/operator can be set-up in accordance with the vessel arriving at the berth and so no time is wasted for both parties. Vessel and terminal expenses can also be saved while the platform can also help operators keep their ships on schedule.
“We are excited to work with Piraeus Container Terminal and help them drive efficiencies in their berth alignment process by facilitating streamlined data exchange,” said Thor Thorup, CCO and co-founder of PortChain Connect. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration and continuously improving the platform based on user feedback.”
Portchain is the leading provider of berth alignment and planning software for container terminals and carriers and its platform is in place at terminals across Europe, Asia, the Americas, Australia, and Africa.
PCT is owned by Cosco Shipping Ports.
