Port Freeport inks deal with Del Monte

News-in-print

Port Freeport in Florida has concluded a long-term lease agreement with Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc (Del Monte) that will lead to the large fresh fruit producer and transport company moving its operations in Florida to the port in 2024.

Del Monte, which owns Network Shipping and which has been aggressively marketing for third-party business on its ships’ returning legs to Central America, will call at the port weekly. The deal means Del Monte relocating its western US Gulf coast operation to Port Freeport from Port Manatee in 2024, once modifications to the port’s Velasco Container Terminal have been completed. This work involves boosting the facility’s capacity for storing reefer containers by 500 units.

“The recent completion of the 927ft Berth 8 at Velasco Container Terminal and the new Gate 12 entrance project being built to provide efficient terminal access will give Del Monte the first-class infrastructure needed to support its vessel and terminal operations and goals,” said Phyllis Saathoff, executive director and CEO of Port Freeport. “We are excited to welcome Del Monte to Port Freeport and look forward to the commencement of its operations next year.”

“This partnership will create positive economic impacts for our district,” said Ravi Singhania, chairman of the Port of Freeport Commission. “Del Monte will be a great addition to our community, with their commitment to the environment and their goal of working towards a sustainable future.”

Del Monte believes the move will enable it to shed some costs and improve its shipping network. “We look forward to beginning a new relationship with Port Freeport, as Del Monte and as Network Shipping,” said Sebastian Montero, vice president of Network Shipping. “Moving our US Gulf service to Port Freeport will enable us to optimise both our trade lane capacity and our logistics and supply chain services that offer Network Shipping’s non-Del Monte cargo customers a 3PL and an end-to-end solution.”

The move to Port Freeport will involve Del Monte deploying its newest series of ships that were built in 2020 and 2021.
