Rijeka Gateway’s 1st RTG stands tall
NewsThe first RTG crane at APM Terminals’ Rijeka Gateway has been fully assembled and stands tall in Maersk’s iconic blue.
The International Transport Workers’ Federation has contacted the government of Jordan over the arrests earlier this week of around 150 trade unionists at Aqaba Container Terminal
Port workers began a strike on Monday (13th October), which the police action the following day appears to have been designed to break, said the ITF. Strikebreakers are reportedly being brought in from outside the country. The arrested workers, who included several union leaders, were later released.
The ITF’s Arab World office has raised the matter with the country’s government, and ITF general secretary Steve Cotton has written to its Prime Minister, expressing his shock "that a country such as Jordan, with such a robust democratic tradition has allowed interference by the police forces in a labour dispute."
The ITF said it will continue to call for answers from the government and the terminal operator, APM Terminals, at how the police came to be involved in an industrial dispute, and for urgent measures to resolve the dispute.
