Shenzhen, Long Beach ports, South Coast AQMD sign green framework
NewsThe Port of Long Beach and its partners signed a memorandum to collaborate on decarbonising ocean trade in the Pacific Rim.
A modernisation project at the Port of Maio in Cape Verde has been officially inaugurated by Dr Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina, president of the African Development Bank (ADB).
Upgrading the ports of Maio and Palmeira cost €36M, with the ADB contributing €17.87M, the European Union €11M and the Cape Verde Government €7.8M.
The project substantially cuts the travel time by sea between Maio and the capital, Praia, from three hours to one hour. The jetty has been rehabilitated, a ro-ro berth has been created and new road access has been provided.
When the Palmeira leg of the project is completed, both ports will significantly transform the economy of Cape Verde. Annual trade traffic is forecast to rise by 184% to 429,000t in 2024, and passenger traffic by 34% to over 55,000 people.
