Barcelona recovers strongly in 2021

News

The Port of Barcelona handled 66.4 Mt in 2021, 11.8% more than 2020 and just 1.5% less than in 2019, which was the port’s record year in terms of throughput

In container handling, however, 2021 set a new record, with the figure of 3.5M TEU being 19.3% up on 2020 and 6.2% higher than the previous record year of 2019.

José Alberto Carbonell, General Manager of the Port of Barcelona Authority (APB), said: “Relative to 2019, full container traffic climbed 9%, with gains in both exports and imports (10% and 5%, respectively) and goods in transit, which were up 14%.” This strong showing means that “once again we are setting records in total import and export container traffic and transits.

“This was possible because more shipping companies are relying on Barcelona, not only to move exports and imports, but also for their transshipment, which translates into even greater customer diversification.”

The Port of Barcelona closed 2021 with a turnover of €151M, up 9% year on year. This news is in line with the increased flow of goods, although Damià Calvet, APB’s President, explained that “the upturn in traffic outpaces the jump in turnover because the latter includes the port’s economic aid package to promote economic recovery and mitigate the effects of the pandemic.”
