Oakland moves to help exporters

Top US West Coast ports have received over US$ 170 million from the Harbor Maintenance Tax Fund, despite historically minimal federal investment.

The profitability of further decarbonization efforts at US ports is uncertain due to funding reliance on grants and loans, with alternative fuel adoption also hindered by uncertainties in fuel pathways.

Ports on the east of the US face a triple challenge from the drought in Panama, the Suez Canal security issue, and the ILA’s determination to fight automation.

The west coast has some work to do to win back cargo re-routed to the gulf and east coasts, but there were encouraging signs at the Port of Los Angeles in June.

Grants provide funding for infrastructure upgrades, including $450M to support zero emissions projects, and $350M for grade separation at rail crossings.
