Canadian rail networks prepare for shut down
NewsAs Canada heads towards a nationwide rail strike CN and CPKC have stopped accepting certain cargo types as they prepare their Canadian networks for a full shutdown.
WorldCargo News has learnt that, earlier this year, the Finnish Transport Ministry authorised road trains up to 34.5m-long
without a special permit, provided that the vehicles are registered in the EU/EEA area.
The previous limit in Finland for EU/EEA registered trucks was 25.25m, as is the case in Russia, Sweden and Norway. For nonEU/EEA registered trucks, the limit remains 18.75m with a 44t all-up weight, in accordance with EU norms dating back to 1996.
For the new length of 34.5m, the allowable all-up weight is 76t, the same as it is for 25.25mlong rigs in Finland. Operation of these extra-long trucks is not allowed in cities and villages. They can be used only in pointto-point transports between terminals, larger business centres and production sites.
In addition, the maximum permissible length of an articulated truck was increased from 16.5m to 23m, implying an increase in trailer length of 20ft.
So a semi-trailer transport could now be one 40ft and one 20ft container.
The extra-long rigs must have camera systems for side visibility, an advanced emergency braking and lane detector system, electronic driving stability system, and electronically controlled brakes.
The Transport Ministry expects substantial advantages from the new regulations for transporting containers, general cargoes and foodstuffs
