US ports breathe sigh of relief as tariff exemption saves US$ 130m
NewsUS ports welcomed a crucial tariff exemption, saving them over US$ 130 million in unexpected costs on Chinese-made cranes.
Despite two Indian terminals reportedly being denied “security clearance” to purchase ZPMC cranes, four new units are on the water for delivery to DP World’s terminal in Jawaharlal Nehru.
The four cranes are due to arrive at the end of this month and, according to the Indian press, DP World has avoided the issue of the security clearance by not applying for one. These cranes were ordered before the security issue arose late last year when Gammon Infrastructure Projects was denied clearance to purchase six STS cranes and 20 RTGs from ZPMC for its new Indira Container Terminal (ICT) terminal at Mumbai.
ZPMC, which has been supplying cranes to India since 2001, has not been formerly advised of any security clearance requirements to deliver cranes to India. Nor has it been able to locate any official documentation supporting the requirement from the Indian authorities.
