New berth for Cuxhaven

In-Depth

The Lower Saxony port of Cuxhaven is proceeding with its plans to construct an additional berth at the port.

This follows the state’s Secretary for Economic Affairs granting the port permission for the project earlier this year.

Berth 4, which will feature a length of 240m and draught alongside of 14.3m, will be designed to handle general cargo, including heavy/project cargo, and vehicles. An 8.5-ha yard will allow the port to offer its customers a full range of storage and logistics activities.

The port, which is located at the mouth of the river Elbe, expects the energy sector to become a major customer of the new facility. Siemens, for example, is investing over €200M in developing a factory to manufacture wind turbines on a 170-ha site close to the port. As previously reported (WorldCargo News, February 2016, p38), Siemens has signed a long-term agreement with Deugro Danmark AS to transport offshore wind energy products between its plants in Denmark, in Cuxhaven and in Hull, some of which will be shipped on two new purpose-built ro-ro vessels. Production is scheduled to commence in mid-2017.

Cuxhaven’s new berth, which will cost an estimated €36M to build, should be operational by the end of 2017, and it will be managed by state owned Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co, which concluded a long-term operating contract with the port authority (Cuxport) earlier this year.

“With the construction of the berth 4, we are taking an important milestone for the further development of Cuxhaven,” said Lower Saxony’s minister of economics, labour and transport, Daniela Behrens.

“The country has expanded the port of Cuxhaven in recent years to become the leading offshore base port on Germany’s North Sea coast. With the settlement of Siemens, the construction of the German offshore industrial centre, and the new berth, Cuxhaven’s position will be strengthened.”
