Marsaxlokk Container Terminal handled 3.15M TEU in 2017, a new record and 2% up on 2016

Malta Freeport, a venture of Yildirim, CMA CGM and China’s CMPorts, handled more traffic last year even though the number of vessel calls fell slightly to 2,257 in 2016 from 2,155, as vessel and call sizes continued to increase.

Ocean Alliance, comprising CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, Evergreen and OOCL , and the 2M alliance of Maersk and MSC, have renewed their commitment. Other callers are Hamburg Süd, Hapag-Lloyd and SeaGo Line, the feeder operator controlled by Maersk.

Last August Malta Freeport obtained a 30-year extension to its concession. Originally awarded [to CMA CGM] in 2008 for 30 years, it has now been extended to 2069.
