Spain’s two largest container terminal operators, Dragados SPL and Grup TCB, handle similar total volumes of container traffic, but differ greatly in their history, structure and approach.

The foundations of Grup TCB were laid in Barcelona in 1972 with the inauguration of the Príncipe de España Wharf. This wharf was operated by Marítima Layetana, which became the first company in Spain to operate a container terminal. Volumes grew steadily, from 5100 TEU in 1972 to 581,700 TEU in 1982. A decade later, Marítima Layetana merged with its affiliate and neighbour on the Muelle Príncipe de España Wharf, Tersaco, to form Terminal de Contenidors de Barcelona (TCB),  in order to run the new container terminal at the Muelle Sur wharf.
