Unlike the Rhine, freight traffic is poorly developed on the Danube waterway. According to one expert, Dr Dejan Radojcic of the Danube Project centre, who is also Professor of the Department of Naval Architecture, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Belgrade University, the present utilisation rate is only about 10% of capacity. The Danube has a navigable length of 2400 kms shared by 10 riparian countries and, in theory, connects the Black Sea and North Sea via the RMD Canal.
