Rethinking AGV charging
NewsSiemens has developed a charging station for battery AGVs at automated terminals
SR Drives Manufacturing Ltd, UK-based and part of the Emerson Group, refers to its patented technology as “dc drive performance without brushes.” A switched reluctance drive employs an ac feed converted to dc that powers the rotor without recourse to frequency control ac conversion. It provides infinitely variable speed control down to stall conditions, with maximum torque available at zero speed.
Switched reluctance technology is not new and SR Drives itself grew out of a commercial spin-off of theoretical work at Leeds University in the 1980s. The company is now the largest developer of this patented technology that is claimed to offer all the advantages of frequency control ac motors but without the need for complicated control systems such as frequency manipulation. It offers the potential to be “significantly cheaper,” says the company.
