In a reversal of the trend for leading UIRR and other intermodal operators to be taken over by national rail companies (eg Kombiverkeher/ DB, Novatrans/SNCF), Swiss-based Hupac, Europe’s second biggest UIRR company, is to take a share in the financially-troubled Swiss national rail company SBB Cargo.

The two companies are founding a new traction company, SBB Cargo International, to handle transalpine transit freight between Germany and Italy, the single most important source of combi-traffic in Europe. Hupac will have a 25% stake in the new company, which will begin operations at the start of next year.
