After completing regulatory approvals in 23 jurisdictions, Maersk Line has closed its €3.7 billion acquisition of Hamburg Süd from the Oetker Group, giving it almost a 20% share of total global container fleet capacity.

It is generally accepted that the global GDP container trade growth multiplier has weakened in recent years, and this has important implications for future growth in overall shipping container demand. At the same time, however, the outlook for specials, such as tank containers and reefers, is determined not just by macro drivers, but by changes in shipping methods.

While cargo fl ows to/from Latin America have risen this year, overcapacity remains a problem on several routes, and freight rates remain at near historic Lows.

ZIM has added 800 remotely controlled and monitored reefer containers to its fleet. ZIM’s remote reefer monitoring system, ZIMonitor, was developed by the carrier, together with Israeli start-up ArrowSpot.
