Figures published by ECT, which accounts for some 70 per cent of container throughput in Rotterdam, showed an increase in inland shipping from 35 to 36 per cent while the rail share increased from 13 to14 per cent.
The share of road transport fell from 52 to 50 per cent, equivalent to almost 100,000 TEU. The share of truck traffic at ECT has fallen by 16 per cent since 1993. Allowing for increases in the total number of containers handled, this means that road traffic has stabilised at about 2.4 mill TEU.
