Kazakhstan plans new China-Russia transit route
NewsKazakhstan is developing a new trade route from China to Russia via the Irtysh River, with a port and railway planned, aiming for completion by 2026.
Russian transit traffic via Finnish and Baltic Republic ports could soon face another home-grown competitor in the shape of Ust-Luga.
The 1 mill tonnes/year first phase of the coal terminal is almost ready, but in future the port may also boast a fertiliser export complex and a ro-ro ferry link to Germany. And Valery Izraylit, general director of the Ust-Luga company, confirms that a container terminal is included in a draft business plan drawn up by the US National Institute of Ports and Waterways, based in New Orleans.
