Tacoma tests GPS for inland rail

The US west coast port of Tacoma is testing a GPS tracking system that tracks intermodal containers from the time they leave waterfront terminals to their arrival at destinations in the midwest and eastern United States.

Claimed to be the first developed for tracking containers inland on rail from a US port, the system is designed to allow Port of Tacoma intermodal planners to better understand inland rail issues and ultimately to work with railroads and shippers to improve the speed and reliability of freight deliveries.
