Kazakhstan plans new China-Russia transit route
NewsKazakhstan is developing a new trade route from China to Russia via the Irtysh River, with a port and railway planned, aiming for completion by 2026.
As briefly reported in last month’s issue of WorldCargo News (p32), a new intermodal service aimed at shortsea traffic carried in 45ft high cube, palletwide containers has been launched between the Finnish Port of Hamina, just 30 km from the border with Russia, and Saint Petersburg, by ContainerTrans Scandinavia, a joint venture of TransContainer (Russian Railways) and VR Cargo (Finnish Railways).
The first 90 TEU train, carrying household appliances for the Russian market, was dispatched towards the end of last month to the Shushari rail station. Initially, the service, a rail haul of 500 km, will be operated on a weekly basis and, says ContainerTrans’ marketing director Artem Gubarev, it is hoped to transport 1500 TEU by the end of this year.
