Transnet resumes port operations
NewsTransnet is gradually resuming port operations after weather-related suspensions, with some terminals still affected and safety measures ongoing.
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has commissioned a new dedicated grab hopper dredger for Durban. As reported previously (WorldCargo News, February 2015, p8), several vessels have touched sand this year, in or close to the entrance channel.
Over the past three months, Transnet’s existing grab hopper dredger, ITALENI, has been used more often in Durban; it is usually shared between several South African ports.
Durban port manager Moshe Motlohi said: “An update on our dredging programme is communicated on a weekly basis to our stakeholders, members of the South African Association of Ship Operators and Agents.”
TNPA has blamed the propellers of larger vessels now using Durban, for creating a build-up of sand in the container terminal berths, harbour and entrance channel. It conceded that more regular dredging was now required. A contract to supply a dredger for one year has been offered, so that dredging work at the port can be speeded up while TNPA’s own vessel is built. In addition, a small bed-leveller under construction in Port Elizabeth could work alongside the new grab hopper.
