New port for Mexico

News-in-print

The governor of the Mexican state of Nayarit, Robert Sandoval, has announced plans to build a new port – Puerto Nayarit. This would require finance of US$3.6B, with funding to be provided by China Machinery, China Merchants Holding, China International Marine Container and Qtraid. If the port is built, it will be the only one on the North/Central American continent, according to the governor, able to accommodate 18,000 TEU vessels.

The project has received a cautious reception from the Transport Ministry (SCT), which stated that the area in which the port would be built has been declared a tourist zone, not an industrial or commercial one. There is also doubt as to whether it will be possible to locate facilities in an area where a draft of 18m would be available, since this would mean mixing commercial and tourist areas.
